Nathalie Djurberg è nata a Lysekil, Svezia, nel 1978, mentre Hans Berg a Rättvik, in Svezia, nel 1978. Entrambi vivono e lavorano a Berlino.

Dando forma a un universo immaginario dalla forte portata simbolica e allucinatoria, la ricerca di Nathalie Djurberg e Hans Berg (duo svedese Leone d’Argento alla Biennale di Venezia nel 2009) proietta l’osservatore in un viaggio all’interno di ambienti archetipici abitati da creature animali trasfigurate ed esseri umani dalle fattezze grottesche. Dopo una formazione influenzata dagli studi sulla scultura figurativa e classica, dal 2001 Djurberg si dedica alla creazione di video animati realizzati con la tecnica del passo a uno (o stop-motion), ovvero riprendendo ogni singolo fotogramma che riproposto in sequenza restituisce l’illusione ottica del movimento. Nascono così narrative e paesaggi popolati da personaggi realizzati in plastilina, fil di ferro e stoffa che veicolano molteplici aspetti di decadenza, violenza sociale e relazioni di potere: in loro le categorie di genere e gli stereotipi sono spesso sovvertiti a favore di simbolismi e allucinazioni tipici di un sogno ad occhi aperti. Nel 2004, la collaborazione con il compositore Hans Berg arricchisce ulteriormente il lavoro della Djurberg, catapultando le sue installazioni e i suoi video in uno spettro di suoni e ritmi che rimarcano il senso di contraddizione dell’animo umano.

Shaping an imaginary universe with a strong symbolic and hallucinatory reach, the research of Nathalie Djurberg and Hans Berg (the Swedish duo who were awarded the Silver Lion at the Venice Biennale in 2009) sends the observer on a journey within archetypal environments inhabited by transfigured animal creatures and human beings with grotesque features. After an education influenced by studies on figurative and classical sculpture, since 2001 Djurberg has focused on the creation of animated videos made with the stop-motion technique, i.e. filming every single frame that, when played in sequence, restores the optical illusion of movement. In this way, narratives and landscapes are created, populated by characters made of Plasticine, iron wire and fabric that convey multiple aspects of decadence, social violence and power relations: in them, gender categories and stereotypes are often subverted in favour of symbolism and hallucinations typical of the daydream. In 2004, her collaboration with the composer Hans Berg further enriched Djurberg’s work, catapulting her installations and videos into a spectrum of sounds and rhythms that emphasise the sense of contradiction of the human soul.
