“Penso che prima della tecnica ci sia lo studio della natura. Guardo alla natura e alle radici degli alberi che sono fonti di energia e memoria, oppure alle foglie con la loro leggerezza e poesia. Amo raccogliere foglie nei miei diari e ricamarle, studiarne i colori e le texture, per poi tradurli in arazzi o in coreografie per le mie performance”.

Nato nel 1982 a Milano, dove vive e lavora.
La performance è il mezzo espressivo attraverso il quale De Falco dà vita alla propria scultura, intrecciando oggetti e corpi, in sintonia con la natura. In bilico tra bidimensionalità e tridimensionalità, la sua ricerca si esprime in una personalissima tecnica tessile definita “wrapping”, ispirata all’antica arte della tessitura manuale a telaio verticale che consiste nella moltiplicazione incessante di nodi che si avvolgono attorno a un’anima di materia tessile. Storie intessute, arazzi decorativi e membra alludono a radici. Cotone, lana, lino, canapa e seta si intrecciano in rami, foglie e fili di ferro. Creano una rete di strati che come bozzoli accolgono sentimenti ed emozioni. Formatosi presso la Scuola Superiore d’Arte Applicata del Castello Sforzesco di Milano, De Falco vive e lavora tra Milano, Parigi e Roma.

“Before the technique, comes the study of nature. I look to nature and to the roots of trees; sources of energy and memory, or the lightness and poetry of leaves. I love collecting and embroidering them to my diaries, studying their colours and textures, to then translate them onto tapestries or in choreographies for my performances.”

Born in 1982 in Milan, where he lives and works.
Performance is the expressive medium through which the artist brings his sculptures to life, connecting the wrapping to the bodies of the performers, in a single movement in harmony with nature. Somewhat poised between two- and three-dimensionality, his artistic research and artistic production are expressed in a very personal textile technique called ‘wrapping’, inspired by the ancient art of manual weaving with a vertical loom, which consists in the incessant multiplication of knots that wrap around a core of textile material, joining and weaving tales into decorative tapestries and bodies with shapes reminiscent of tree roots. His works highlight the close relationship between the artist and nature: in his sculptures, cotton, wool, linen, hemp and silk are woven into branches, leaves and iron wire, creating a dense network of layers that, like cocoons, host human feelings and emotions. Having trained at the Scuola Superiore d’Arte Applicata of the Castello Sforzesco in Milan, Thomas De Falco now lives and works between Milan, Paris and Rome.
