Nato a Bristol, Regno Unito, nel 1965. Oggi vive e lavora tra Londra, Gloucestershire e Devon.
Figlio di un meccanico e di un’artista dilettante, Damien Hirst studia alla scuola d’arte di Leeds, per poi trasferirsi a Londra come impiegato nel settore dell’edilizia. Nel 1986 si iscrive al corso di belle arti del prestigioso Goldsmiths College, e nel 1988 lavora all’organizzazione e alla curatela di Freeze, una controversa mostra collettiva nota per essere stata il trampolino di lancio non solo per Hirst stesso, ma per un’intera generazione di artisti britannici denominati Young British Artists (YBAs). Sul finire degli anni Ottanta, Hirst inizia a produrre sculture e installazioni complesse che mettono in scena il dramma dell’esistenza e della sua inevitabile fine, interrogandosi sulle prospettive umane della mortalità e sul come esorcizzare la morte attraverso lo strumento della medicina, della religione, della procreazione o dell’esaltazione della materialità. I titoli delle sue opere – le quali nel tempo hanno preso anche la forma di cicli pittorici e disegni – sono parte integrante del suo lavoro, e molto del significato delle sue creazioni deriva proprio dal titolo stesso.

Born in Bristol, UK, 1965. Today, he lives and works between London, Gloucestershire and Devon.
The son of a mechanic and an amateur artist, Damien Hirst studied at the art school in Leeds, before moving to London as a construction worker. In 1986 he enrolled in the fine arts course at the prestigious Goldsmiths College, and in 1988 worked on the organisation and curatorship of Freeze, a controversial group show known to have been the springboard not only for Hirst himself, but for an entire generation of British artists then referred to as the Young British Artists (YBAs). In the late 1980s, Hirst began to produce complex sculptures and installations that stage the drama of existence and its inevitable end, questioning the human perspectives of mortality and how to exorcise death through medicine, religion, procreation or the exaltation of materiality. The titles of his works – which over time have also taken the form of painting and drawing cycles – are an integral part of his work, and much of the meaning of his creations derives from the title itself.
